About Us
The European Centre for Journalism and Trauma (ECJT) was established in 2025 to carry forward the movement within journalism for ethical reporting on survivors of violence and for evidence-informed psychological support of news and media professionals.
The Centre can trace its roots back to 1999 and the establishment in the United States of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma based first at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1999-2009 and then at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York from 2009-2025.
The US organisation, and its London-based sister organisation the Dart Centre for Journalism and Trauma in Europe, had for many years been supported by funding from the Dart Foundation in Michigan. This funding has since ceased and as a result the US and European organisations have been renamed.
The European Center for Journalism and Trauma is a UK registered charity and an independent not-for-profit organisation.
The organisation is led by a board of trustees with a wealth of experience in journalism, documentary film making and academic research. It is dedicated to informed, innovative and ethical news reporting on violence, crisis and tragedy and aims to foster the psychological resilience of journalists and media professionals worldwide.
